Sports Massage

Sports massage is not just for athletes; it has been designed with athletes in mind, but it is suitable for anyone with chronic pain, injury or a reduced range of movement.

Massage

Rehabilitation, Relief, Treatment

The primary objective of sports massage is to relieve the stress and tension that accumulates in the soft tissues during physical exercise. Massage can heal minor injuries and lesions caused by over-training and/or fatigue, quickly and efficiently. Above all, it can help prevent the injuries that often stand in the way of your performance and achievements, whether you are an athlete, an enthusiastic amateur or a runner who trains once a week.

Sports massage is not just for athletes; it has been designed with athletes in mind, but it is suitable for anyone with chronic pain, injury or a reduced range of movement. Anyone can benefit from a sports massage, including people with physically demanding jobs or even those with repetitive working practices – including long hours of sedentary work.

What should I expect from a sports massage?

You will have a discussion with the therapist to ensure that you have no contraindications to treatment, or specific problem areas that you would like the therapist to avoid.

It is also important that the therapist understands your sport and is aware of the specific requirements of each activity, so as to design the massage treatment accordingly.

THE ADVANTAGES OF SPORTS MASSAGE:

  • Improved performance
  • Fewer injuries
  • Improved flexibility and increased range of movement
  • Faster rehabilitation after muscle injury
  • Removal of accumulated lactic acid

There are three areas where sports massage is beneficial for athletes

MAINTENANCE MASSAGE

A regular treatment schedule based on understanding of the anatomy and the muscles used in a specific sport, which are susceptible to injury. By focussing on specific muscle groups, the massage therapist can help athletes maintain or improve their range of movement and muscle flexibility.

RACE MASSAGE

Massage treatments before an event and after an event, are required for different purposes. Pre-race treatment is used to complement the athlete’s warm-up, to increase circulation and reduce surplus muscular and mental tension before a race. Post-race massage aims at reducing muscle spasms and the metabolic accumulation that occurs during high-intensity exercise.

REHABILITATION

Even with preventive maintenance, muscles suffer from cramps, bruising and pain. Massage can accelerate healing and reduce fatigue during the rehabilitation process.
